Podcast Episode Summary

During the hard market, search engine optimization (SEO) isn’t always at the top of independent insurance agents’ priority lists. Many agents think or hope they can simply turn their SEO “on” when they’re ready to focus on their marketing again.

In reality, SEO is a long-term strategy that needs to be continuously managed in order to rank in the search engines. Below are several SEO best practices that your agency can implement now so you can have a competitive edge once the market stabilizes.

Insurance Agency Websites

  • Improve your website’s on-page SEO by optimizing the content on your webpages.
  • Improve your website’s technical SEO, which is the backend of your website that includes components such as page speed, mobile-friendliness, and website security.
  • Make sure your website loads quickly and looks great on any device.
  • Your agency website should have an SSL certificate, which lets both search engines and consumers know that your website is secure and safe to browse.

Local Listings & Online Reviews

  • Your agency should be present on any website consumers may visit to try and find pertinent information about your business (i.e., Apple Maps, Waze, social media sites, review platforms like Yelp, data aggregators like FourSquare, etc.).
  • Ensure there is consistent and accurate business information across every platform, even with little details such as spelling out the full word Street or abbreviating it to St.
  • Local listings can boost your agency’s SEO by driving more traffic to your website and creating high-quality backlinks when you include your website URL in each listing.
  • It’s best practice to send review requests to policyholders a couple of times each year, as well as a Net Promoter Score (NPS) survey to gauge customer satisfaction, particularly leading up to renewal periods.

Social Media Marketing

  • Social media can boost your SEO by directing people to your website through links in your agency’s posts or profiles.
  • Links to your agency’s social media profiles can also rank in the search engines and improve your overall online presence.
  • You can rank higher in search engines by consistently publishing new content on your social media platforms.
